Q. Besides external stimuli or internal thoughts that may trigger the memory to resurface. This question is mainly directed towards instances where there is no conscious stimuli/thought process that is associated with the memory and the memory suddenly appears seemingly out of nowhere. Is it perhaps controlled by the autonomic aspects of the nervous system like involuntary muscle movement? But if we can't identify what triggers them how do we know for sure something has to trigger it? Why can't it simply be a random misfire that happens to have be the neuron that the memory is stored in?

A. There has to be some sort of stimulus for anything to appear to the surface of our memory...hidden or not. Sometimes the stimuli is a sound, touch, smell, word, or sight that might be such a hidden trigger that it is unidentifiable. Sometimes it is actually a positive association even in regards to a negative memory (yes, it sounds bizarre). Swinging on the swings, smell of spaghetti, going to the fair, someone brushing my back, a car backfiring, thunderstorms... Sometimes it is a feeling within the body--like your stomach cramping. Maybe that is what you are getting at. Body memories suck. But even body memories have to be triggered by something. I guess a memory could be triggered by an involuntary twitch, but I don't think the… [cont.]
